Taberî9-10. c.

According to Tabari, support can occur either by hand or by tongue: by hand means defending him with the sword and the like; by tongue means speaking well of him and praising him, and defending his honor — the word 'tawqir' (honoring) also means 'ta'zim' (exaltation).

Fahreddin er-Râzî12-13. c.

Razi notes that the Prophet testifies that there is no god but Allah [as a similar expression also appears in Surah Al 'Imran 3:18]; his testimony resembles that of the prophets, to whom Allah gave knowledge from Himself and taught what they did not know.

Kurtubî13. c.

According to Qurtubi, 'shahid' (witness) — according to Qatada: a witness for your community regarding the conveying of the message; or: a witness over them regarding their obedience or disobedience; or: one who clarifies to them what you were sent with; or: a witness over them on the Day of Resurrection — that is, a witness to their deeds today and a witness against them on the Day of Resurrection (the view of Sa'id ibn Jubayr, explained in detail in Surah an-Nisa). 'Mubashshir' (bearer of glad tidings) — of paradise, for those who obey him; 'nadhir' (warner) — of the Fire, for those who disobey (Qatada and others). The words 'shahidan, mubashshiran, nadhiran' stand in the accusative as an anticipatory circumstantial state — like Sibawayh's example: 'I passed a man with a falcon, who will hunt with it tomorrow' — meaning: We sent you already destined to bear witness on the Day of Resurrection.

İbn Kesîr14. c.

According to Ibn Kathir, this means bearing glad tidings of abundant reward to the believers and warning the disbelievers of severe punishment; the interpretation of this phrase was already given in Surah al-Ahzab.

Beydâvî13. c.

According to Baydawi, 'We sent you as a witness' — a witness for your community; 'as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner' — regarding obedience and disobedience. 'So that you may believe in Allah and His messenger' — the address is to the Prophet and the community, or to them alone (the address to the Prophet being treated as standing in for the address to them). 'And support him' — strengthen him by strengthening his religion and his messengership. 'And honor him' — exalt him. 'And glorify Him' — declare Him (Allah) transcendent above imperfection, or pray to Him. 'Morning and evening' — or continually.
