Taberî9-10. c.— shortened translation (source text was very long)

In connection with this verse, Taberî makes an important methodological remark on the science of tafsir. According to a report from Ibn 'Abbās, Quranic exegesis divides into four parts: that which the Arabs know from their own language; that for which no one is excused on account of ignorance (i.e., what everyone must know); that which the scholars know; and that which only Allah knows. Taberî emphasizes that this fourth part must not be confused with the first — rather, it is a part whose interpretation (ta'wīl) no one is permitted to claim to know. He cites in support a hadith whose chain of transmission is disputed: 'The Qur'an was revealed upon four modes: the lawful; the unlawful — for which no one is excused on account of ignorance; interpretation which the Arabs provide; interpretation which the scholars provide; and the ambiguous (mutashābih) — which none knows but Allah, and whoever claims to know it is a liar.' Taberî then repeatedly cites, through many different chains of transmission, a hadith forbidding the interpretation of the Qur'an according to one's own opinion (ra'y) — all sharing the same core wording (from Ibn 'Abbās, from the Prophet): 'Whoever speaks about the Qur'an according to his own opinion, let him take his seat in the Fire.' Some narrations add 'or with something he does not know.' He also cites a saying attributed to Abū Bakr: 'What earth would carry me, what sky would shade me, if I said something about the Qur'an that I do not know?' Taberî explains that these reports confirm his view: interpretation that can only be known through the Prophet's explicit statement or an indication he established may not be spoken of according to personal opinion — even if one happens to be correct, one is still considered mistaken, since one spoke from conjecture rather than knowledge; and whoever speaks about Allah's religion out of mere conjecture says something about Allah that he does not know, which Allah has forbidden in His Book.

For two reasons: First, that establishing that the believers are upon truth and they are upon falsehood is a rational, speculative matter; whereas that hypocrisy and the transgression within it lead to corruption on earth is, by contrast, necessary and runs as something perceptible by the senses. Second: He mentioned folly (safah), which is ignorance; therefore mentioning knowledge as its counterpart was more fitting by way of antithesis (tibaq). And Allah knows best. The explanation branches into three aspects: First, that they are corrupters, because disbelief is corruption on earth — for in it lies ingratitude for Allah's favor, and everyone's pursuit of his own whims; for if a person does not believe in the existence of God and hopes for neither reward nor punishment, people fall into chaos against one another — from this it is established that hypocrisy is corruption; this is why He said: read with fatha, since it is in the middle of the sentence, while the kasra reading is only fitting at the start of a sentence. For this reason the scholars mentioned several views: First, az-Zajjāj said: the clause after (إلا) is the description of an omitted referent, and the meaning is: 'We sent no messenger before you except that they ate food and walked in the markets' — the referent was omitted because this is already understood from the preceding statement. That is, the disbelievers from Muhammad's people, peace and blessings be upon him, fold their chests in order to hide from him. Know that the Exalted reported two things about these disbelievers: First, that they fold their chests — one says 'he folded a thing' when he bent and rolled it up. Regarding the verse there are two views: The first view: it is reported that a group of the polytheists said: 'When we close our doors, let down our curtains, wrap ourselves in our garments, and fold our chests in enmity toward Muhammad — how then could he know about us?' According to this interpretation, His saying is:

This is a response to them and a refutation of their statement as false. The masters of rhetoric said: whoever openly makes a claim is exposed as a liar by its refutation — do you not see that Allah, mighty and exalted, says: 'ألا إنهم هم المفسدون' (Indeed, it is they who are the corrupters)? This is correct. 'إن' is read with kasra because it begins the sentence — this was said by an-Naḥḥās. 'Alī ibn Sulaymān said it may also be read with fatha, just as Sībawayh permitted in 'ḥaqqan innaka munṭaliq', in the sense of 'ألا'. 'هم' may be the subject with 'المفسدون' as its predicate, the subject and predicate together forming the predicate of 'إن'; or 'هم' may be an emphasis of the suffix in 'إنهم', or a pronoun of separation. The Kufans call it 'imād' (a prop); in that case 'المفسدون' is the predicate of 'إن', with the meaning 'ألا إنهم المفسدون' — as previously in 'وأولئك هم المفلحون'. Regarding Allah's saying, Ibn Kaysān said: one who does not know that he is a corrupter is not blamed for it; blame applies only to one who knows he is a corrupter and then knowingly commits corruption. Two answers have been given to this: first, that they used to commit corruption secretly while outwardly displaying righteousness, unaware that their affair would be exposed before the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. The other view: their corruption was, in their own eyes, righteousness, and they were unaware that it was corruption — yet they had disobeyed Allah and His Messenger by abandoning the clarification of truth and following it. 'Lākin' (but/however) is a particle of emphasis and qualification; it requires negation and affirmation before and after it: if negation precedes, affirmation follows; if affirmation precedes, negation follows. When affirmation has preceded, one may not content oneself afterward with a single noun, but must state a clause contrary to what preceded — as in this verse, and as in your saying 'Zayd came to me, but 'Amr did not'; it is not permissible to say 'Zayd came to me, but 'Amr' and then fall silent, for in such a position one uses 'bal' instead of 'lākin'; this is only permissible when negation has preceded, as in your saying 'Zayd did not come to me, but 'Amr'.

Allah says: Indeed, that which they rely upon and claim to be reform is in fact the very essence of corruption; but due to their ignorance, they are unaware that it is corruption. <The verses continue>

'Indeed, it is they who are the corrupters, but they are not aware.' This is the most emphatic rejection of what they had claimed — through resuming the sentence anew and prefacing it with two particles of emphasis: (ألا / indeed/behold), which alerts to the certainty of what follows; for the interrogative hamza of denial, when it enters upon a negation, conveys affirmation — an example of this is (أليس ذلك بقادر / 'Is He not able to do that?'). For this reason, the clause following it hardly ever occurs except introduced by something that anticipates an oath; its sister 'أما', which is also among the preludes to an oath, likewise belongs here. 'وإن' affirms the predication, and the definiteness of the predicate along with the insertion of the pronoun of separation serve to reject what was implied against the believers in their statement 'إنما نحن مصلحون' ('We are only reformers'); 'لا يشعرون' ('they are not aware') is a qualifying addition.
